£35,000 DISTRIBUTED IN US-CST SECURITY DEVELOPMENT AWARDS
Thirteen successful synagogues have been awarded security grants totalling £35,000 as part of the ‘United Synagogue – Community Security Trust Security Development Awards’. Now in its second year, the grants are awarded to synagogues to enable them to improve security measures in and around their buildings. The award ceremony will be held in London on February 9, 2006.
The United Synagogue, in partnership with the Community Security Trust, invited synagogues across the country to apply for grants for specific security requirements. The Community Security Trust, together with the Metropolitan Police, advised the best way the grants could be put to use and priority was given to security measures that would contribute to the saving of life.
Out of nineteen applicants, thirteen synagogues were successful in their applications. Both constituent members of the United Synagogue and affiliated synagogues applied for and received awards. These synagogues will be assisted by the Community Security Trust to improve security with measures such as shatterproof glass, cctv cameras, upgrading security alarms and perimeter fencing.
Leonie Lewis, Community Development Group Director of the United Synagogue said, “These awards provide crucial support for those synagogues who do not have the appropriate funds to improve vital security measures. We are deeply appreciative of the involvement of the CST and Metropolitan Police whose expert advice and input is invaluable. This is a fantastic example of a partnership which will deliver real and lasting value to the recipient communities.”
Mark Gardner of the Community Security Trust said, “We are delighted to be working with the United Synagogue and the Metropolitan Police on this project. The protection of synagogues and communal buildings is of the utmost importance, and we will be working closely with the synagogues in order to help them enhance their security infrastructure and ensure the safety of everyone attending services and other activities.”
