London,

With Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu stepping down as Rosh Beth Din at the end of December, the United Synagogue is pleased to announce that Dayan Menachem Gelley will serve as Senior Dayan of the London Beth Din from January 1 2007.
Dayan Gelley, aged 48, is a highly respected scholar with many years of practical experience as a halachic authority in the community. He has served on the London Beth Din for thirteen years, having initially joined as an associate Dayan in 1993. He studied at various Yeshivot in England as well as at the prestigious Ponovezh Yeshivah in Israel before concluding his qualifications at the Gateshead Kollel. During this time he also served an apprenticeship with various leading scholars and halachic decisors in Israel and America. Dayan Gelley has over the years had a strong association with a number of United Synagogue communities, notably Hampstead Garden Suburb, Golders Green and Finchley, offering each particularly valued support when they had no permanent Rabbi in situ. Dayan Gelley is also the Rabbi of a young community, Ohr Chodosh, in North West London.
The Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks commented; ‘‘It has been a privilege to work with Dayan Gelley and come to admire his wisdom and compassion no less than his erudition as a master of Jewish law. He brings great distinction to the London Beth Din”
President of the United Synagogue, Simon Hochhauser said “The Court of the Chief Rabbi (London Beth Din) has for many years been at the core of Orthodoxy in this country and we look forward to a bright, dynamic future with Dayan Gelley’s guidance and support.”
