Rabbi Lord Sacks has been Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth since September 1 1991, the sixth incumbent since 1845.

Widely recognised as one of the world's leading contemporary exponents of Judaism, Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said of him (March 2004) that "he has made a significant contribution to the health and well-being of the British Jewish community, and he has played a key role in creating and maintaining cohesion between communities of both faith and no-faith."
