Burial FAQs

What are the opening times of the various cemeteries?

Please check the website under Cemeteries.

Can I pay any bill to the Burial Society using credit cards?

Yes, switch and all major cards are accepted, except American Express.

What is the purpose of the poles around the cemetery?

They act as an Eruv, which allow Cohanim to gain access to the cemetery grounds.

Why must we pay a fee for booking a consecration?

The fee is for administrative purporses.

Why do we pay a tombstone fee?

It is a common practice in many cemeteries, not just United Synagogue ones, that outside masons pay a fee on all memorials they erect or work on.

What is the purpose of the masonry fee?

This allows for the taking apart and reaffixing of a double memorial for the interment.

Is there a waiting area at the cemetery?

Yes, there is a waiting area under the canopy at Bushey and Waltham Abbey cemeteries. Other cemeteries’ waiting areas are situated outside the relevant prayer hall.

Are there catering facilities on site?

No, but there are cold water machines in all the offices. Should you require any help, please ask a member of staff.

Why does the maintenance fee have a VAT charge associated with it?

It is a service and therefore we are obliged to charge VAT.

Who are the US approved Monumental Masons?

Please see the attached list under Memorial Stone Masons.

What type of stone should I have the memorial made out of so that it is easy to clean and hardwearing?

Please feel free to contact the cemetery or the stone masons who will advise you appropriately.

How do we clean the stones?

Please contact the cemetery concerned.

Is there a bus service available to take us around the grounds?

Yes, at both Waltham Abbey and Bushey cemeteries. We also have a wheelchair buggy at Bushey and wheelchairs are available at all of our ‘working’ cemeteries. If you would like to confirm this please feel free to contact the relevant cemetery.

Is there a resident Minister or Rabbi on site to say prayers and so on?

No, but a lot of our staff do have the ability to say prayers if required.
