CONSULTATION LAUNCHED INTO HACKNEY’S COMMUNITY RENEWAL PROJECT

Following the pending 2006 closure of Hackney synagogue, the United Synagogue has today launched a consultation into a contemporary and innovative Community Renewal Project in the heart of fashionable Victoria Park, Hackney. The United Synagogue is inviting all of Hackney’s Jewish constituents to register their interest at hackneyrenewal@unitedsynagogue.org.uk and put forward their own suggestions for the future of the community renewal project.

Close to the City’s financial district, Victoria Park is fast becoming a much sought after area for young Jewish professionals and their families. Plans have been developed to transform part of the heritage site on Lauriston Road, E9, into a modern multi-purpose Synagogue and Community Centre, which is able to meet the needs of the younger generation, and will greatly enhance the current provision for the existing Jewish community. The space will be designed to attract new audiences to Jewish learning and will have an area for prayer and reflection as well as kosher catering facilities and a creative workshop space for arts, drama and events.

Samuel Klein, Resources and Development Manager of the United Synagogue commented: “The consultation we have launched today will enable us to understand the needs of the Jewish community in Hackney whose makeup has changed invariably over the last few years. We want to provide an open, modern, contemporary Jewish centre in Hackney which will encourage and enthuse younger Jewish families to join the community and use the wide-ranging facilities that will be available.

“Hackney has been a centre of Jewish life for well over one hundred years and we aim to ensure that it remains so in the future.”
