The United Synagogue

Lady J Chesed Fund

The United Synagogue is dedicated to supporting its members in times of need. Whether it is providing home or hospital visits, offering a listening ear, bereavement support or walking an elderly member to shul, the US has over a thousand volunteers making a difference to the lives of others on a daily basis.

For those that knew her, Lady J’s personal chesed activities were immense, be it the 600 telephone calls she made to wish people Good Yom Tov, the hundreds of hospital visits she made, and hundreds of s’mechot she attended and the numerous charities to which she offered her advice, support and patronage. She served as an inspirational role model to all of us.

The ‘Lady J Chesed Fund’ has been set up in her honour to allow us to develop more Chesed projects within the United Synagogue in her zechut. The money we raise will help to fund:

1. The Lady J Volunteer Training Programme
We have over 1,000 volunteers across all of the United Synagogue family. This programme will give all our volunteers basic induction training and then more specialist training should they wish to become, for example, a bereavement befriender or hospital visitor.

2. The Lady J Chesed co-ordinator
While over 40 US communities demonstrate, day in and day out, how much they care about their members, there are a number of smaller, more ageing communities that have no formal care structure and no volunteer network. With your donation we will bring in a chesed worker to make sure that members in these communities (often where the need is greatest) are not excluded or left in isolation.

3. The Lady J Volunteer Support Programme
Some of our care groups are struggling to meet the needs of their members. We will create a central pool of volunteers willing to visit or make phone calls for any US member community and we’d like to twin communities so that those with more volunteers can support other communities where there are insufficient numbers.

We thank you sincerely for your support. With your donation, these new projects will become a reality. If you would like to join our volunteer network or would like more information on our chesed projects please call Candice Woolfson, Projects Director, on 020 8343 5688 or email her at cwoolfson@theus.org.uk

THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION
